Pigeon Cove is a small fishing community. In 1891 one family lived there, and ten years later only a widow, an elderly man and two young girls were recorded living there. According to family tradition, Zephaniah and Elizabeth Applin, with the encouragement of the elderly relative who was the community's only resident, moved to Pigeon Cove from nearby Forrester's Point with their young family in 1920. The Applin family fished for herring and lobster, and operated a small lobster cannery for many years. Over time, other families moved into the area. The population was 17 in 1935, and was fewer than 30 as late as 1971. Several families then moved from Current Island to Forrester's Point and built homes along the road to Pigeon Cove. Family names found at Pigeon Cove today include Applin, Dredge, Gibbons, and Williams, the latter of the three are also family names of Current Island.
