Anchor Point is located on Route 430 on the Great Northern Peninsula. It is the earliest English settlement on the Great Northern Peninsula, settled in the late 1700's by the Genge Family of Somerset England. The area was founded as a base for fishing and fur hunting. The first settler of Anchor Point was Robert Bartlett and his nephew Robert Genge. Robert Bartlett later returned to England while Robert Genge was joined by his brother Abram, who employed men from England seasonally and sold furs and fish to American vessels. Anchor Point also has the oldest consecrated cemetery.

For many years, Newfoundlanders had a tradition unique in North America. They would spend their summers and falls in homes near the coastal waters which provided their livelihood, but in winter, would move further inland to the more sheltered areas, simply referred to as Winterhousing. The tradition of "Winterhousing," was practiced throughout the Viking Trail region, including near Anchor Point, at a site known as Deep Cove. Deep Cove is located just south of Anchor Point with a trail which leads hikers to the old scenic winter village. In winter, this trail serves as a cross country ski trail.
